Through 2009, permits for reconfiguring your existing dock allow us to design and construct a dock that conforms to the current codes regarding length, width and overwater coverage. Meaning, as long as your current dock isn't already at the maximum size allowed by the current code (and most aren't), you can add to your existing dock as long as its location conforms to current local codes (property line and adjacent structure set back requirements). We anticipate the proposed code changes will limit the size and layout of the reconfigured pier and dock. In other words, starting with permits issued in 2010, your dock's configuration may be limited to a size or length less than what you have now. So, if you want a longer dock, you may have to remove a finger pier or the ell at the end. The proposed language states that when replacing piers that are larger than the size permitted under the Army Corps' RGP 3 permit (see link to federal permits), the size of the replacement pier may be 80% of the original pier or the maximum size allowed by RGP 3 standards, whichever is greater. |
