Marine Carpenter

Job Summary:

The Marine Carpenter will work with a team to complete construction tasks and general maintenance of boat docks. This is a fast-paced environment that can be demanding but also extremely rewarding. Job duties include loading and unloading of job-related materials, working in the yard to pre-construct dock related structures, general maintenance of job-related tools and equipment, demolition of existing docks, driving piles, constructing boat dock framing, installing decking and dock accessories. This position reports to the job-site Foreman as well as the Production Manager.

The right candidate should be comfortable working in diverse settings to produce steady and functional infrastructure and products, possessing an eye for detail. Good working knowledge of wood properties and other carpentry materials and the use of all necessary tools is a must. They should be capable of working with little supervision while following all health and safety standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Works with designers and planners on construction projects
  • Defers to the contractor’s orders on large construction projects
  • Match materials to requested design specifications
  • Measures building materials and spaces for accurate installation
  • Orders building materials as needed
  • Creates materials that fit the client’s expectations
  • Assembles sturdy and well-constructed dock framing
  • Incorporates fixtures like boat cleats, ladders, bumpers, fenders, brackets, and boat whips
  • Builds temporary housings and supports for setting concrete
  • Combines carpentry work with joining work
  • Repairs and refurbishes existing building work
  • Replaces damaged wood
  • Uses power tools and other tools to cut and shape wood, metal, and other materials
  • Communicates with the rest of the construction team

Requirements:

  • Two (2) years of carpentry or dock building experience
  • Comprehensive understanding of best building practices and job-site safety regulations and requirements
  • Ability to read blueprints, drawings, and sketches and fully grasp requirements
  • Accuracy taking measurements and calculating the size and amount of material needed for a project
  • Skilled in the use of all the tools necessary to cut, shape, and smooth lumber and other material (e.g. fiberglass) according to measurements
  • Ability to assemble/build boat docks
  • Ability to work in extreme conditions for prolonged periods of time
  • Must be able to multitask
  • Basic understanding of computers, smartphones, MS Office, and industry software
  • Must have the ability to learn new skills, problem-solve, follow protocols, take initiative, and lead by example
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record AND reliable transportation
